Most live game shows give you a single decision: where to put your chips before the wheel spins. Cash or Crash is different. You ride a blimp over a city, a ball machine decides whether you climb or fall, and after every good ball you choose whether to bank your winnings, bank half, or keep going.
Evolution launched it on 22 September 2021. Its Chief Product Officer said at the time that “this is not just a strategy game, but it is a skill-based game”, with a 99.6% payback rate “when played optimally”. This guide explains the rules, the three choices, what Evolution’s numbers mean, and how to play it sensibly.

How Cash or Crash works
Evolution’s game page and launch release describe the format:
- One bet. There are no side bets. Evolution’s launch release says “There are no side bets and no complexity.”
- A 20-step ladder. Your bet climbs a 20-step paytable. The higher you go, the bigger the payout.
- A ball machine. Coloured balls are drawn at random:
- Green ball: you move up the ladder.
- Red ball: the blimp crashes and you lose, unless you have a shield.
- Gold ball: gives you a shield against the next red ball, and can increase the payouts on the paytable, up to 50,000x your bet.
- Ball counts. Evolution’s launch release mentions “20 balls advancing players and just 8 red balls”, along with one special gold ball.
Your three choices
Every time a green ball is drawn, Evolution’s page says you have three options:
- TAKE ALL ends your round and secures your current winnings.
- TAKE HALF banks half your current winnings and keeps you in the game with the other half.
- CONTINUE keeps everything on the line for a chance to climb higher.
The launch release adds that you also get this choice after a gold-ball shield is broken.
The gold ball Bonus Round
A gold ball triggers a Bonus Round in which decisions are skipped because you are shielded from crashing. You watch as more balls are drawn and, with luck, more green balls take you further up the paytable.
A round, step by step
Here is how a typical round might go, using Evolution’s rules. The ladder values are illustrative, because Evolution’s public pages do not list the paytable.
- You place a ₹100 bet before betting closes.
- The first ball is green. You move to step 1 of the ladder and see your current winnings. You choose Continue.
- The second ball is gold. You now have a shield, and the Bonus Round skips your decisions while more balls are drawn.
- A red ball is drawn. Your shield breaks instead of the blimp crashing, and you get to decide again. You choose Take Half, banking half of your current winnings.
- The next ball is red again. Your remaining half is lost, but the half you banked is yours.
The example shows why Take Half exists. It turns an all-or-nothing round into one where a bad draw costs you only part of what you built.
What Evolution’s numbers mean
99.6% RTP, “when played optimally”
Evolution’s release says Cash or Crash is “the 99.6% RTP (Return To Player) game”. Its CPO adds that it “has a 99.6% payback rate when played optimally”. That qualifier matters. Because you make decisions, the return you actually get depends on when you Take All, Take Half or Continue. Evolution does not publish what the optimal strategy is on the pages we checked. The game’s Help screen is the place to look for any guidance and for the full paytable.
“Cash out with a profit 71% of the time”
Evolution’s CPO also said that “with 20 balls advancing players and just 8 red balls, players will have the chance to cash out with a profit 71% of the time on average”.
Our calculation: with 20 advancing balls and 8 red balls, the first ball drawn is not red with probability 20 ÷ 28 = 71.4%. That matches Evolution’s 71% figure. It describes the chance that you get at least one opportunity to Take All at a profit. It is not the chance of reaching the top of the ladder, which is far lower. Evolution’s wording does not make clear whether the gold ball is one of the 20 advancing balls; if it were an extra 29th ball, the figure would be 21 ÷ 29 = 72.4%.
The pages we checked do not give the full paytable, whether drawn balls go back into the machine, or exactly how the gold ball changes the ladder. We have not calculated anything beyond the first ball for that reason.
Strategy in plain terms
Without the published optimal strategy, the honest advice is about risk, not a secret system:
- Every Continue risks what you have built. A red ball takes the whole amount, unless you are shielded.
- Take Half is a middle path. It locks in some profit and leaves a smaller amount riding. It suits players who want to see how far the blimp goes without risking everything.
- Decide your rule before the round. For example: “I take all at step X” or “I take half at step Y, then continue.” Making the decision in advance is easier than making it while the host is building suspense.
- The 50,000x prize is a headline, not a plan. Climbing the full ladder needs a long run of good draws. Plan your session around the common outcomes.
Cash or Crash vs other games
| Game | Provider | Your decision | Top prize (per provider) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash or Crash | Evolution | After each green ball: Take All, Take Half or Continue | 50,000x |
| Crazy Time | Evolution | Where to bet before the spin | 20,000x (Crazy Time bonus) |
| MONOPOLY Live | Evolution | Where to bet before the spin | See the game page |
| Aviator | Spribe | When to cash out as the multiplier climbs | See the game page |
Cash or Crash sits between a game show and a crash game. It has a host and a studio, like Crazy Time, but your choices during the round matter, like Aviator.
Playing on mobile
The game uses augmented reality graphics, so a phone screen can feel crowded.
- Play in landscape to see the paytable ladder clearly.
- Make sure your connection is stable. The Take All / Take Half / Continue window is short, and you do not want a dropped stream to make the decision for you.
- Live streams use more data than RNG games.
Before you play
Cash or Crash is unusual because your decisions really do affect your return. Treat that as a reason to plan, not a reason to chase. Set your budget, decide your cash-out rule before each round, and stop when you reach your limit. Our RTP and volatility guide explains why even a high-RTP game can lose money in a short session. Cash or Crash: common questions
How does Cash or Crash work?
You place one bet, then a ball machine draws coloured balls. Each green ball moves you up a 20-step paytable. A red ball crashes the blimp and you lose, unless a gold ball has given you a shield. After each green ball you choose to Take All, Take Half or Continue.
What is the RTP of Cash or Crash?
Evolution's launch announcement says Cash or Crash has a 99.6% RTP. Its Chief Product Officer specified that this is the payback rate 'when played optimally', so your real return depends on your Take All, Take Half and Continue decisions.
What does the gold ball do in Cash or Crash?
The gold ball gives you a shield that protects you from the next red ball. Evolution says it also increases the payouts on the paytable, up to the 50,000x top prize, and triggers a Bonus Round in which decisions are skipped while you are shielded.
How often do players cash out with a profit in Cash or Crash?
Evolution says players 'will have the chance to cash out with a profit 71% of the time on average'. That fits the ball counts it gives: 20 advancing balls and 8 red balls, so the first ball is not red 20 times out of 28, or 71.4%, by our calculation.
Is Cash or Crash the same as a crash game like Aviator?
Not quite. Both reward you for stopping before a 'crash', but Cash or Crash is a live game show with a host and a ball-drawing machine. You make a decision after each ball instead of watching a multiplier climb continuously.
